1.Social Butterfly Joining a sorority helped push me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. If we’re being honest the transition to DePauw wasn’t the easiest thing for me. As an introvert trying desperately to be an extrovert I was exhausted by the first month. I accumulated dozens a phone numbers for people I’d never talk to again and if it wasn’t for my twin sister allowing me become her “third roommate” I’d have been completely lost. Looking back as a senior, it wasn’t until recruitment that I gained my closest friends and because of these women I am now more confident than ever.
If you’d asked me to dance in front of hundreds of people before joining a sorority I would have laughed in your face. Before joining a sorority I was the opposite of a dancer. The closest thing I have to dance experience is a month of ballet classes I took when I was seven. However, I danced in Greek, God, and Goddess my sophomore and junior year. While I think I blacked out of fear and spent majority of the dance in the back row this was a tremendous accomplishment for me. There is no way I would have done anything like this without joining a sorority.
As the Director of Philanthropy for my chapter I planned a lot of events my sophomore year. Before taking the position I had no idea how much detail and organization skills you need to put on even the simplest of events. My experience has not only improved my time management, organization and leadership skills but it is also a tremendous resume builder. I attribute a lot of my success securing internships because of this position and don’t think I’d be in the same place without it.
If you count painting sheet signs as artistic talent then call me Picasso. Painting sheet signs is a lot of work! For those of you who don’t consider this “art” then you try painting one and get back to me. Since I joined as a freshman I have been apart of our sheet sign committee. It has always been a great opportunity for me to be creative, take a break from schoolwork, and hang out with friends.
After joining a sorority, I will forever be my sister’s biggest cheerleader. I have been a lot of sporting events that I probably wouldn’t have gone to if I weren’t in a sorority. I make it a priority to support my sisters in everything they are involved in and I know they’d do the same for me.
