Kappa Alpha Theta was founded in 1870 as the first Greek-letter fraternity for women at DePauw University. During her sophomore year, a student named Bettie Locke, one of the first females to enroll at the University (then known as Indiana Asbury) was extended the opportunity to wear the Greek-Letters of a male fraternity. However, Bettie desired her own membership in an organization that fostered friendship, loyalty and life-long support between women. With this desire and three friends by her side, Bettie set out to establish Kappa Alpha Theta. Since then, the organization has grown extensively and has established chapters across the nation.
Kappa Alpha Theta is one of the 6 Panhellenic chapters on DePauw’s campus. The women of Kappa Alpha Theta are heavily involved on campus in various athletic, academic and social endeavors. We are leaders in organizations such as Timmy Global Health, Presidential Ambassadors, College Mentors for Kids, D3TV, WGRE, Rent the Runway, and Relay for Life. Numerous members of Kappa Alpha Theta are strongly represented in the honors and fellows programs including Management Fellows, Honor Scholar and Media Fellows. We also put a priority on service to the Greencastle community, with multiple girls involved in the Bonner Scholars program and Civic Fellows.
As a chapter, Kappa Alpha Theta places a strong importance on striving for the highest scholarship and the widest influence for good. Theta expects each member to achieve high scholarship and to develop to the fullest her intellectual, cultural, and social potential. The chapter requires a definite scholarship average which members must maintain in order to retain the social privileges of active membership. We strongly emphasize philanthropic endeavors, proudly hosting multiple events each year such as Christma-Hanu-Theta-kkah and the Black Tie Talent Show, that raise money for our national philanthropy C.A.S.A (Court Appointed Special Advocates).
